1. What is a proxy account?

A proxy account allows access to the Library Electronic Resources normally restricted by UCHC IP , e.g., UCHC Electronic Journals, Electronic Textbooks, and Databases from off-campus sites and from the UCHC-Guest WiFi when on campus.

2. Who is eligible for a proxy account?

Remote access to our library’s resources via our proxy is available only to the following people:

  • UConn Health Center faculty, staff, and students with a network logon
  • University of Connecticut faculty, graduate students, and some categories of undergraduate students
  • Community or Affliated Faculty at UCHC with an official faculty appointment

Your name must appear on a list of eligible people sent to our Access Services staff.

If you are a Community Faculty, you must have a faculty appointment from the appropriate UCHC clinical department (e.g., orthopedics, family medicine etc.) and your name would then appear on one of these lists. (Working with a community faculty person does not make you eligible).

If you are a Community Researcher, you must have prior approval and your name must appear on our Community Researcher list.

Unfortunately, our licensing agreements with publishers prevent us from making remote access to our online resources available to other library patrons even if you have a Library barcode. We would be held liable for licensing violations if we were to expand remote access beyond these very strict guidelines. Check with our Access Services department if you have any question about eligibility at (860) 679-3808.

3. How do I obtain a proxy account?

If you are a UConn Health Center faculty member, staff or student with a network logon, you are already registered. Use your network logon as your proxy username/password.

If you meet the eligibility requirements but do not have a UConn Health Center network logon, come to the Library circulation desk or use the appropriate online form to get a library barcode. If you've already registered with the library, you should have a barcode. Make sure your library registration is up to date. The proxy server login will be your barcode number (no spaces) and your last name in all upper case. Please allow at least three business days to get your account set up. Check with our circulation department if you have any questions at (860) 679-3808. More details.

4. Do I need to configure my browser?

No.

5. What browsers are supported?

EZProxy is browser independent, i.e., any browser including browsers on mobile devices should work with EZproxy.

6. Do I have to log in every time I want to access resources?

Sessions will last for approximately two hours and then you will be asked to log in again. If you exit your browser or shutdown your computer at any time you will be asked to log in again.

7. I click on a Library resource but the proxy box doesn't appear.

The resource must be accessed from the Library's home page http://library.uchc.edu/ to generate the proxy login page and it must be one that is restricted by IP. Not all resources on the Library's home page are restricted.

Try a different browser, for instance if using Google Chrome, try Internet Explorer instead.

UConn Health network logon users

  • Try to access another Health Center resource such as email at https://itowa.uchc.edu to test the username/password.
  • If you cannot log into email, contact the IT Helpdesk (860) 679-4400 to have the username/password issue resolved.
  • After resolving the username/password issue with IT, contact the Library's circulation desk at (860) 679-3808 and let them know that the proxy login box does not pop up.
  • Be at the computer from which you are trying to access proxy. Library staff will ask for information about the computer.
  • Note: UConn Health students with laptops - If you have changed your password wirelessly from an off-campus site, you will need to plug into the UCHC network with an Ethernet cord so that the UCHC network receives your new password. When changing passwords, it is best to do it on-campus with a wired connection.

Barcode users

  • Have your barcode information available and contact the Library circulation desk at (860) 679-3808.
  • Confirm that the barcode is the most current with an up to date registration and also confirm the spelling of your last name.
  • Let Library staff know that the proxy login box does not pop up.
  • Be at the computer from which you are trying to access proxy. Library staff will ask for information about the computer.
  • When the issue is resolved, be sure to enter the barcode without spaces and your last name in all upper case.

8. What do I do if I get a message saying that my proxy login was invalid or incorrect?

If you use a UConn Health network logon to access proxy -

  • This is the same username/password used to access email or log into a computer at the UConn Health Center.
  • Try to access another Health Center resource such as email at https://itowa.uchc.edu to test the username/password.
  • If you are having issues with your username/password, please contact the IT Helpdesk (860) 679-4400.
  • Note: UConn Health students with laptops - If you have changed your password wirelessly from an off-campus site, you will need to plug into the UCHC network with an Ethernet cord so that the UCHC network receives your new password. When changing passwords, it is best to do it on-campus with a wired connection.

If you use a barcode to access proxy -

  • The proxy server login is your library barcode number without spaces and your last name in all upper case.
  • If you just registered for the proxy account, please allow at least three business days to activate your account.
  • Make sure your library registration is up to date and you are using your current barcode.
  • Please check with our circulation department at (860) 679-3808 for further information.

9. Can I create bookmarks that will utilize proxy to access IP restricted resources?

Yes. To create a bookmark instead of accessing a resource through the Library website, the proxy prefix must be added to the resource's URL. The prefix that triggers the proxy logon prompt is: http://online.uchc.edu/login?url=

For instance, the URL for PubMed is: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=uchclib. Add the proxy prefix to this URL and the result would be:
http://online.uchc.edu/login?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=uchclib

10. Can I access UCHC Library resources from UCHC affiliated hospitals?

Yes. You should be able to access UCHC Library resources from UCHC affiliated hospitals.

11. Can I access full-text electronic resources within the online catalog?

Go directly to the Library Catalog or access the catalog from the Library Website http://library.uchc.edu/ .
Click on the red "Off-Campus Proxy" button.
Click on "Library Catalog via Proxy" link. The proxy login screen will appear.

UConn Health Center users will enter their network username and password in the appropriate boxes.
