1. What is a Proxy Account?
A proxy account allows you to access the Electronic Resources normally restricted by UCHC IP , e.g., UCHC Electronic Journals, Electronic Textbooks, and Databases from off-campus sites.
2. Who is eligible for a Proxy Account?
Accounts on the proxy server can be obtained by faculty, staff, and students at the University of Connecticut Health Center; and faculty, staff, graduate students, and some categories of undergraduate students from University of Connecticut. Unfortunately, our licensing agreements with publishers prevent us from making remote access to our online resources available to other library patrons even if you have a 14-digit barcode. Check with our circulation department if you have any question about eligibility at (860) 679-3808.
3. Obtaining a Proxy account
If you haven't registered to be a library patron, come to the library circulation desk with your valid UCHC ID or use appropriate form as available online to get a library barcode. If you've already registered with the library, you should have the barcode on the back of your UCHC ID. Make sure your library registration and UCHC badge are up to date. Library expiration dates vary depending on your patron group. The proxy server Username and Password will both be your 14-digit barcode number. Please allow at least three business days to get your account set up. Check with our circulation department if you have any questions at (860) 679-3808.
4. Configuring Your Browser to Use Proxy Automatically
Although you are welcome to use Internet Explorer (IE) 4 or higher in place of Netscape, experience from other institutions has revealed a number of serious problems and bugs in IE's handling of certificates.
Select the option below that corresponds to your browser software and follow the instructions.
Please Note: Netscape7.X is not recommended. Please download the previous versions at http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive.html
Netscape 4.x and 6.x (PC and MAC)
Netscape 3.x (PC and MAC)
Internet Explorer 5.x (cable modem) (PC)
* For MAC users, please download Netscape at http://www.netscape.com because Internet Explorer doesn't seem to work with automatic proxy configuration.
5. Accessing Electronic Resources Restricted by UCHC IP
When you click on
a link to access a resource restricted by UCHC IP, a Username/Password box will
come up. If you are already in the IP restricted page, reload the page so that
you can get the Username/Password box. The Username/Password box should look
like this:
|
Netscape |
Internet Explorer |
Enter your 14-digit barcode number for both Username and Password. If you are using Internet Explorer and the box doesn't come up, please download Netscape from http://www.netscape.com.
6. Undoing the Configuration while not using the Electronic Resources restricted by UCHC IP
Although it is not necessary to take off the proxy services, we do suggest that you undo the configuration when you are not using the Electronic Resources restricted by UCHC IP.
Select the option below that corresponds to your browser software and follow the instructions.
Netscape 4.x and 6.x (PC and MAC)
Netscape 3.x (PC and MAC)
