The Circulation Department of the UCHC Library has begun sending out courtesy notices, via e-mail, to remind patrons to return 3-day journals and AV material, or to renew books they have checked out. Courtesy notices are sent out two days before the items are due and detail the various ways you can renew a book, i.e. via phone at 860-679-2839, email to email@example.com or through the library online catalogue at http://lymannet.uchc.edu .
In the short time we have been doing this, the response has been extremely positive and productive. Patrons who return or renew material are saved from receiving our dunning overdue notices or billing plus processing fees, which currently can total $90 or more! Library staff time is saved from checking the stacks, generating notices, keeping files, calling patrons and collecting fees.
