Databases: Changes and Cancellations

Many electronic resources are very expensive, and the costs for most continue to rise. Since database prices continue to escalate more rapidly than our budget, we have made the following changes in regard to database subscription:

1. The Library has cancelled subscriptions to PsycInfo (psychology), CINAHL (Nursing) and Current Contents (Clinical Medicine and Life Sciences) for which we receive duplicate or comparable coverage free of charge from the main library at UConn Storrs (Go to http://library.uchc.edu and click on Databases to access these databases).

2. OVID ONLINE, a web-based gateway to a variety of databases (Medline, Evidence-Based Medicine, Full-text Journals and HAPI (Health and Psychological Instruments), will replace the text version of Ovid databases. Please use the web version of Medline at OVID ONLINE or PubMed. Both are available from the library's homepage under "Databases."

The decision to make these changes was primarily based on content, cost and convenience. Within the current budgetary constraints due to the price increases of library resources, the change was necessary. In most cases, you will continue to have access to these databases, but they will have a different search engine or client, and will therefore look different. The library home page menu will continue to seamlessly guide you to the databases you need. Below is the list of changes and cancellations and the alternate access. The savings from these changes and cancellations will benefit the budgets used for purchasing other databases that the library users need. It will also help us to fund electronic databases that the main library does not provide.
