Connecting Your Laptop
Network
connections can be found in the library carrels and at the reading tables. Wireless
access is available throughout the library. There are hardware requirements
and software configuration changes that may be required in order to make a successful
connection.
Wireless Configuration - There are two
options for a wireless connection within the Library. One option is open
to the public and requires no configuration, the other is a secure wireless
network requiring configuration, UCHC usernames and passwords.
General Public - UCHC provides
JDH-Link, an open wireless network that requires no configuration. When
your laptop finds the JDH-Link network, simply connect to it and follow
the directions that appear when you access the internet. Please
note that with regards to the Library's subscribed e-Resources,
JDH-Link is treated as if you were off-campus. You will need to utilize
your Library barcode to access Library resources via Proxy. This
is an open unsecured network, NEVER transmit sensitive data,
including HIPAA regulated information through the JDH-Link.
Students and Faculty
- UCHC also provides a secure wireless network. Access to
this network requires hardware (internal or external wireless card),
software configuration and a UCHC network username/password. You will
not need to use a library barcode/Proxy to access Library subscribed
e-Resources if you use this network. Students and faculty with a Blackboard
account can access UCHC secure wireless network setup instructions through
Blackboard.
- Log into Blackboard
- Click on Computing Support
- Click on Wireless Setup
- Select the appropriate wireless setup instructions
Other UCHC Staff - If you are UCHC
staff but do not have a Blackboard account, you may contact the CEC,
the Network Systems Department in the Library or the UCHC IT Helpdesk
at x4400 then press 1. They will assist you with setup instructions.
Wired Connection
- Wired connection requires an Ethernet network card and a network
cable. If you're not sure whether you have an internal or external
network card review your laptop specifications and manual. Usually it
looks like a phone jack somewhere along the sides or back of your laptop
and may have an pyramid shaped image of three connected PCs next to it.
You do not need a UCHC username/password to access the wired network.
Plugging in to the network jack should give you access. To check for a
connection to a live jack do the following:
- Turn on your laptop.
- Insert one end of your network cable into the carrel / library table
network jack and the other end into the jack on your laptop. A small
light next to the jack on your laptop should glow or blink green to
indicate a successful connection. If it doesn't light up at all then
that network jack is not working. Select a jack at another carrel
/ library table.
Please see the Circulation staff to check out a network cable. The bookstore has
cables available for purchase. The cable is Category 5 network cable with RJ-45
connectors.
