Loaner Laptops
The Library has five laptop
computers available for loan.
Who May Borrow
Anyone with a valid UCHC Library barcoded ID may borrow a laptop.
The circulation period is 24 hours. The circulation period may be renewed if
there are no other patrons waiting for the laptops.
The patron will be required to sign a "Laptop Borrower's Agreement"
outlining the patron's responsibilities if the laptops (or its parts) are not
returned. The Agreement also states that the patron will abide by the UCHC
IT Computer Use Policy.
Please be aware that use of the laptop is on a "self-service"
basis. Printed instructions are provided to help you connect the cables and
operate the laptop. Refer to the instructions for assistance.
Some procedures may be different than those followed at your desktop, notably
logging on and saving documents, please be aware of these.
Library staff is not available to provide software application (Word, Excel,
etc.) support. Utilize the "Help" menu in the application or refer to books
in the library (see library catalog) regarding that application.
About The Laptops
The laptops are Lenovo Thinkpad T60 PCs. They are
running Windows XP with both Office 2003 and Office 2007.
They also
have the conversion utility installed that allows Office 2003
to read Office 2007 documents.They have 1 gigabyte
of RAM. The hard drive size is approximately 108 gigabytes.
They have a USB floppy drive and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. They
may be used with AC power or off the battery. They have both
wired and wireless network access and a modem. They have Internet
Explorer, Firefox and Netscape
installed.
The laptops will be re-imaged each time they are returned to the library so
you should remember to save any documents you've created on the C:\ drive to
your own media.

Can I save to a floppy disk (or other media) or the hard drive?
Yes. The laptops will be re-imaged when returned to the Library so remember
to save your documents to other media before returning the laptop.
How often should I save my documents?
Ask yourself "How much work do I want to recreate?" If you're copying/pasting
a great deal of information or working within a long and complicated document,
you'll probably want to save often.
Can the next person using the PC see my documents?
When the PC is returned to the Library it will be re-imaged. Any changes you
have made including creating documents or changing browser preferences, will
be reversed. This is why it is critical for you to save your documents to other
media if you want to keep them.
Can I email from this PC?
You may view or send email through internet email access.

Can I print from this PC?
Yes, if you are connected to the network at the Health Center you may print
from the Library's public color and black & white printers. The standard
UnipriNT charges will apply if you choose to print to these printers.
Can I do word processing on the PC?
Yes, you can use the Microsoft Office 2003 products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
etc.
Are the programs on the PC compatible with my data?
The laptops are running Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003. They
also have the conversion utility installed that allows Office 2003 to read Office
2007 documents.
Can I "dial out" using this PC?
Yes, the PC does have a modem. The Library carrels are not wired for phone access.
Which Internet browser should I use?
Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Firefox are installed on the laptops.
If you encounter a problem viewing a site with one browser, try the other.
Can I use CDs / DVDs on this PC?
Yes.
