Sketch of Gurdon Wadsworth Russell, M.D. 1815 Born in Hartford, CT; early schooling at Hartford (Hopkins) Grammar School. 1834 Graduated Trinity College. 1835 Student of Dr. A. Brigham. 1837 Received M.D. degree from Yale Medical School. Appointed Surgeon in 1st Regiment, CT Militia. 1838 Married to Sarah Elizabeth Tuttle (d. 1871). 1839 Birth of 1st son, Edward (d. 1877). 1840 Contemporary of Horace Wells. Became member Connecticut Historical Society. 1846 Charter member Hartford Medical Society. 1850 Began career with AEtna Life Ins. Retired from AEtna in 1902. 1853 Birth of daughter, Elizabeth (d. 1855). Survivor of railroad accident, at Norwalk, CT on May 6th. 1856 Birth of 2nd son, Gurdon (d. 1858). 1857 One of Hartford Hospital's founders. 1861 Dr. Russell's AEtna salary as Medical Director: $300/year. 1871 President of Connecticut State Medical Society. 1883 Married to Mary Beresford (d. 1921) 1885 Contemporary of J.H.Campbell, M.D. and Mark Twain (Clemens). Served as City Parks Commissioner @ 25 years. 1887 HMS Loving Cup presented to Dr. Russell. Resided at 207 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, now site of Hastings Conference Center. 1889 Portrait in oils by Charles N. Flagg. Served as President, Hartford Medical Society to 1893. First Vice President of the Association of Life Insurance Medical Directors of America. 1890 Published "Up Neck in 1825"; Co-authored "Sketches of Physicians in Hartford 1820". 1892 Published "Early Medicine & Early Medical Men in Connecticut". 1895 Wrote "Contributions to History of Christ Church", Hartford. 1902 President, Chair Med-Surg. Staff, Hartford Hospital Medical Visitor, Retreat for the Insane, now the Institute of Living. 1909 Died in Hartford after countless years of devotion to his family, and service to the community and professional excellence. |

8. A surgeon's case of the type used during Russell's time.
9. Print of "The Railroad Calamity
at Norwalk, Conn. May 6, 1853," Dr. Russell was returning from a medical
meeting on this train, and survived the crash.
