Scales to Scalpels: September 12, 2012

Lisa Wong, M.D.

Once again the Town & County Club was the site of an enjoyable evening dinner event. Physician Lisa Wong spoke about music and healing as it is practiced by the physicians comprising the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Wong played the viola as part of her presentation. Her recent book is Scales to Scalpels.

The Hartford Medical Society held a dinner/lecture at Hartford's elegant Town & County Club. Author Mary Cappello gave an illustrated reading on her recent book Swallow: Foreign bodies, Their Ingestion and the Curious Doctor Who Extracted Them.

Evolution and the Cesarean Section Rate: May 25 , 2011

Dr. Joseph A. Walsh

Dr. Joseph A. Walsh, M.D. spoke about the theory that cesarean sections are removing the selective disadvantage to large babies born to small mothers. Larger babies may have larger brains, leading to speculation about higher average IQs .

Doctors as Poets: December 1, 2010

Held at the elegant Town and County Club in Hartford, this event featured lunch and readings by two of Hartford's respected doctor-poets.

Oh, Mummy!!: May 24, 2010

Professors Ronald Beckett and Gerald Conlogue

Ronald Beckett, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Quinnipiac University, and Gerald Conlogue, professor of Diagnostic Imaging at Quinnipiac University, led morbidity and mortality rounds on the paleoimaging of mummies.  Founders of the Bioanthropology Research Institute at Quinnipiac in 1999, their work has been featured on several Discovery and Learning Channel productions.  They hosted The Mummy Road Show on the National Geographic Channel from 2001 to 2003.

HMS Open House: September 10, 2009

Professors Lynn Laskowski and Francis Coan

The open house started at 3 p.m. in front of the Stowe Library with tours and a scavenger hunt. At 4 p.m. in the Low Learning Center, Lynn Laskowski and Francis Coan from Tunxis Community College presented “Mark Twain and the Traveling Tome” the story of the James Medicinal Dictionaries, printed in 1743, that once belonged to Mark Twain.

Stephen Upham, M.D., MBA and extensive world traveler, presented slides and spoke about his three-week journey into this exotic part of the world.
