The Menczer Museum of Medicine and Dentistry of the Hartford Medical
and the Hartford Dental Societies is a unique and cooperative venture.
The museum came into being in early 1974.
The collection includes instruments, equipment, furnishings, and
portraits from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with a special
emphasis on the life of Horace Wells and the history of anesthesia.
Presently, with the exception of the library stacks, literally the
entire building serves as the physical structure wherein the collection
is housed. From the beginnings of four showcases, the museum now has
sixteen such cases, three wall cases, and nine full rooms of displayed
artifacts, representing a marvelous cross-section of Dental and Medical
history.
The Menczer Museum of Medicine & Dentistry is closed to
the public as of October 1, 2008.
We are packing the exhibits in preparation for the move to The University
of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington later this year. The displays
will be changing and not all items will be on exhibit as in the past.
Some parts of the collection will be at the Tunxis Community College and
the local hospitals. The Fones School of Dental Hygiene will also have
some significant pieces from the dental collection. Look for more news
of exhibits after we move.
Thank you for your interest in the museum.
