FULL TEXT PUBLICATIONS

American Family Physician
A full-text, online version of the print journal. Excellent review articles on clinical medicine, many of which are accompanied by patient education handouts. Online access is restricted to paid subscribers for the first year after publication.
Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, 17th ed.
A full-text, online version of the medical guide for professionals.  Technical information on diseases and their diagnosis and treatment, clinical pharmacology, poisoning, bites and stings,and special topics including motion sickness, radiation injuries, heatstroke, and others.
Merck Manual of Geriatrics
Similar in format to the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, this focuses on diseases and disorders with special implications for the elderly.
Merck Manual of Medical Information - 2nd Home Edition
A general guide for consumer on diseases and their treatments, women's, men's and children's health, and accidents and injuries.  Complete online version of the text edition. There are animations, videos, photographs, and a pronunciation guide to medical terms.
Postgraduate Medicine
Professional medical journal with review articles on diseases and treatments.  Patient notes offer easy to understand information on common conditions and their treatment.

MEDICAL JOURNALS ON THE WEB

Many scientific and medical journals have their own web site. Most of these sites publish a table of contents for each issue as well as an abstract of each article. Occasionally, the site will include the full-text of a noteworthy article. FreeMedicalJournals.com   provides links to free medical journals available online.  Some of the medical journal sites do not include free access to current issues, but may have a six month to a year waiting time before the journal is available free. Some sites such as the  British Medical Journal and  Postgraduate Medicine have free access to the
current and back issues.

MEDLINE
Search PubMed which provides access to MEDLINE, the database produced by the National Library of Medicine, to find author, title, and summaries  of medical journal articles.
MEDLINEplus
Information on over 650 diseases and medical conditions written for the consumer, with links to relevant citations and abstracts of medical journal articles. Includes a separate drug information section,  medical dictionary and encyclopedias, and directories.

Cancer.gov
From the National Cancer Institute, comprehensive information on cancer for the patient and the health professional. Cancer Trials
From the National Cancer Institute, search for information on 1,500 current research studies on cancer. Includes information defining clinicals trials, how to search for studies, how to participate.
Complementary/Integrative Medicine Educational Resources
From the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, Houston, this site has evidence-based reviews of  complementary or alternative cancer therapies as well as links to other authoritative resources. These reviews evaluate the designs and the results of published research on herbal, mind-body, energy, nutrition, and other biological / organic / pharmacological (e.g., cartilage) substances.
OncoLink
Information for physicians and patients on causes, diagnosis, current treatment protocols, screening, emotional support,
clinical trials, complementary therapies, and more. Entire site is searchable.
Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization
Breast cancer information for patients and family members and links to other Internet resources. Offers support, referrals, a 24-hour hotline, and links to local Y-Me affiliates. Some information available in Spanish.
Your Cancer Risk
The Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention has developed a personalized tool to help individuals estimate their risks for certain types of cancer.  Risk assessments can be done for 12 different types of cancer and each assessment takes a few minutes to complete.

        American Academy of Pediatrics
        The leading medical authority on children's health. Select the "Parenting Corner" link for information on immunizations, car seat safety,
        children's  physical development, and how to find a pediatrician.  The "Health Topics" link leads you to information on childhood

        and profiles of companies that provide a variety of  contract services to the clinical trials industry. Includes industry and
        government sponsored clinical trials  and information on new drug treatments approved by the  Food and Drug Administration.

        Information on current research being conducted on treatments for different diseases. Browse by disease category and sponsor or
        search the entire site.  Learn what clinical trials are all about and how to decide to participate in a trial.

DENTAL HEALTH

         American Dental Association
       Advice for maintaining dental health from the national professional association of dentists.  Information for the patient can be found in
        the "Your Oral  Health" section.  The "A to Z Topics" area of this section is an alphabetical listing of links to topics such as
        fluoride supplements, "knocked out tooth", and oral cancer.
         American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
         Under "Info for Parents", there are one page online question-and-answer style brochures focused on children's unique dental
        health topics, such as x-ray safety, fluoride, dental care for babies, calming the anxious young patient, and sealants.  The
        Academy is the national professional association of dentists who specialize in treating children.
          Simple Steps to Better Dental Health
          A collection of dental information reviewed by faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.  Provides
          an overview of a variety of dental topics including implants, root canal. crowns, and dentures.  The "Ask the Dentist" feature
          includes responses written by University of Pennsylvania dentists to health consumers' questions.

       products from domestic and  international sources. Includes  fact  sheets on how to evaluate and select products and links to

       Disability Resources On the Internet
       Hundreds of disablity related topics including advocacy, Americans with Disabilities Act, education, employment, housing,
        independent living, legal rights. From a nonprofit organization that provides information about resources for independent living.
       Family Village
       A comprehensive site with links to global disability resources on adaptive products and technology, education, health issues,
        specific diagnoses,  disability-related media and literature, and more.
       National Rehabilitation Information Center
       Although at times difficult to navigate, this site has excellent information on many disability topics. Incorporates information
        from NARIC's five databases and links to disability related web sites.

Fibromyalgia Partnership

Hepatitis

Interstitial Cystitis - MedlinePlus
Interstitial cystitis (IC), one of the chronic  pelvic pain disorders, is a condition resulting in recurring discomfort or pain in  the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region.  The IC section  of  MedlinePlus includes information on diagnosis and treatment, alternative therapies, disease management, nutrition, and links to IC organizations.
Lupus Home Page
Extensive and current information on the diagnosis and treatment of lupus and related research. Published by Hamline University, Minneapolis, MN .
Multiple Sclerosis -  National Multiple Sclerosis Society

DRUGS - PRESCRIPTION/OVER-THE-COUNTER

Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Select the "Drug Information Pathfinder" to read about recent drug approvals,  generic drugs,  drug safety and adverse drug reactions, imports and buying drugs on the Internet, clinical trials, the drug review process, and dietary supplements.  From the main page, there is a link to a catalog of FDA approved drugs, an inactive ingredient database, and the safety and adverse reporting program. Subscribe to their daily or weekly updates of important drug news.
CenterWatch - Clinical Trials Listing Service
Information on drug products currently under investigation arranged by medical specialty  category. Entries give a brief description of research and contact information. Also included is a listing of FDA drug approvals, guidelines to help individuals decide whether to participate in a study, general information on how drugs are studied, and profiles of centers conducting clinical trials.
MedlinePlus Drug Information
Drug information from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Drug Information - Advice for the Patient and MedMaster, a product of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Has thousands of profiles of presccription and over the counter drugs with information on approved uses for the drug, proper use of the drug, precautions while using the drug, and side effects.
PDR Health
Prescription and over-the-counter drug information written for the consumer and based on the FDA-approved drug information found in "Physician's Desk Reference" (PDR).
RxList
There are over 5,000 product names in this database of generic and brand name drugs.  Of these, nearly 1,300 are professional monographs and about 1,500 are patient monographs.    Searches may be done by brand name, generic name, or pharmacologic category (antihistamines, antifungal, etc.).  There is also a feature to search by the alphanumeric characters printed on the tablet or capsule. Links are provided in the monographs to definitions of medical terms.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
Access to The HazDat Database, the Agency's hazardous substance/health effects database. Also includes public health statements on hazardous substances. Special section for children and parents includes health effects of hazardous substances on children.
Environmental Protection Agency
Information about clean water, lead poisoning, radon, reducing solid waste. Advice on reducing environmental health risks at home, in the garden, community and workplace. Includes resources for children. Online versions of EPA's 7,000 publications.
Noise Pollution Clearinghouse
Information on one of the most pervasive pollutants today - noise.  Fact sheets, laws, hearing loss and occupational noise, and noise in the news.

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
Verify the certification status of any physician in the 24 specialities of the ABMS. Registration is required (free) and user is limited to five searches in a 24 hour period.
AMA Physician Select
Gives credentials of MD's and DO's including medical school, year of graduation, and specialties.
American Hospital Directory
Profiles of U.S. hospitals. Basic service is free; more detailed information by paid subscription only.
Choosing and Using a Health Plan
Questions and answers on choosing and using a health plan.
Connecticut Physician Profiles - Department of Public Health
Profiles of all physicians practicing in Connecticut.  Includes information on education, special training, specialities, honors and awards, publications, disciplinary actions, and medical malpractice claims. For additional information on physician disciplinary actions read
the  Regulatory Action Reports .  These reports include disciplinary actions and sanctions against doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, day care centers, nursing homes and others.
Connecticut Licensing Info Center
Allows users to verify the license status of Connecticut health professionals by typing in th name of the health care provider in the License Verification area.  Includes licensing information on doctors, dentists, acupuncturist, massage therapists, nurses, physical therapists, and other profess ions and occupations such as electricians, asbestros removal companies, contractors, etc. From the CT Department of Public Health which is the licensing body.
Federation of State Medical Boards
Select "State Medical Board Info"  from the left-hand index, then select "Board Directory" to find links to web sites for the 50 U.S. States, plus the District of Columbia, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.  Not all of the states have physician profile or disciplinary action information.
There are also links to osteopathic physician sites when available.
Health Pages
Information about physicians, dentists, managed care plans, Medicare Plans, hospitals, mammography clinics, maternity services.
Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
The Quality Check  feature (listed under "JCAHO Shortcuts) on this site supplies details on individual hospital performance ratings from JCAHO’s accreditation reports.  View Performance Reports and compare institutions’ ratings. Reports cover hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory care facilities, home care, laboratory services, and long term care facilities.
Nursing Home Compare
Provides detailed information about the performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country. Searchable by state.  Includes a guide to choosing a nursing home and a nursing home checklist to help in making informed choices.

     American Diabetes Association
    Information about diabetes for African Americans includes specific community  program suggestions, diabetes risk test online,
    background  information on diabetes and its prevalence in the African American community, and a resource  list of related websites.
   National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
   "Prevent High Blood Pressure" booklet online. One of a series of seven easy-to-read booklets on  "Improving Cardiovascular
    Health in African  Americans" available in their entirety on this  website.
   Office of Minority Health Resource Center
   National resource and referral service on minority health issues established by the U.S. Department of  Health and Human Services.

         Agency for Health Care Research and Quality
       Site has publications in Spanish on topics such as how to prevent medical errors, angina, cataracts, pain control, questions to
        ask before surgery, depression, urinary incontinence, rehabilitation after  a stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and others.
       MEDLINEplus - National Library of Medicine
       The Spanish language version of MedlinePlus which includes most of the Health Topics found in the original English version.
        Users can easily switch   between the English and Spanish version of the  information.
        National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases
        Publications on urologic and kidney diseases, diabetes and digestive diseases.
        National Cancer Institute
