This
Resource Guide has been created to assist health consumers in gathering
specific information on dental health care and related topics such as dental
surgery, tooth development in children, and care of teeth in older adults.
There are references to books, websites, and organizations. Each book citation includes the book's unique International Standard Book Number (ISBN), which identifies the book and is helpful when ordering a specific title. Books listed may be available at your public library. If your
library does not own a book you would like to read, the library may be able to borrow a copy for your use
through the Interlibrary Loan System. In addition, Connecticut residents may borrow books directly from
other public libraries within the state with their own town library card.
Some books, such as directories, may be classified as reference
books and available only for use in the library.

the life cycle, this detailed but easy-to-read handbook includes advice

chapters on dental structure and tooth development as children grow. Root
canal therapy, orthodontics, temporomandibular disorder (TMD), tooth replacement,
and related medical conditions are explained in laymen's terms.

by a variety of federal government agencies. Written for the layperson. Organized
by broad topics such as gum disease, braces, implants, dental emergencies,
and special health needs. Many pamphlets are written in question and answer

is a professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. The text has a
thorough discussion of proper dental care. Explanations are enhanced by
clear drawings of tooth anatomy and the processes of tooth decay and gum
disease, charts on dental cavity materials, warning signs for oral cancer,
and dental emergencies.The booklet includes a glossary of dental terms.

Healthy Teeth: A User's Manual. Everything
you need to know to find a good dentist and take proper care of your teeth.

Written by two experienced dentists, the majority
of this book for dental patients cautions patients, in specific detail,
how to be wary of incompetent and fraudulent dentists. There is a chapter
on specific types of dental quackery. The authors emphasize that extra
time and cost are involved in quality dental care. The book includes an
explanation of the process involved in a quality filling, other dental
procedures, and specifies approximately how long different types of dental
work will last. It discusses what to do in specific dental emergencies
if a dentist is not available. Includes an index and a glossary of dental
terms.

books written by the staff of the People's Medical Society, a national
consumer health advocacy organization. Practical, straightforward information
on dental treatment, including care for patients with special needs, and
medical conditions that affect dental care. Strong emphasis on selecting
and evaluating dentists. Includes questions to ask the dental receptionist
and a dentist information worksheet to be used for comparing dentists being
considered. Also discusses dental insurance and finances.
Understanding dental health. Francis
G. Serio. University Press of Mississippi, 1998. 128 p. (ISBN 1-57806-009-5 hardcover/

Written for patients by a professor of dentistry
at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. This book discusses
the anatomy of the mouth and tooth development in detail. Describes technical
terms in a straightforward format. There is information on decay prevention,
extractions, and dental implants. Description of dental filling materials
and how a tooth is filled. Information on dental emergencies, oral cancers,
and oral effects of AIDS are included in a chapter entitled, "What Else
Can Go Wrong?" Explanation of research trends, suggestions for additional
reading, including websites, and a list of U.S. dental schools.

Brief, very easy-to-understand,
large type, one to three page articles on important dental topics, written especially
for health consumers. Authored jointly by a dentist and a health educator,
this basic overview discusses topics such as how to deal with tooth accidents
at home, losing baby teeth, dental fillings, dry mouth, and caring for
your baby's teeth. Includes a word list with definitions and an index.

MAGAZINE/JOURNAL
Maintaining healthy teeth and gums.(Medical
essay.) Supplement to the June 2002 issue of the Mayo Clinic Health
Letter. vol. 20 #6.
Clearly written, eight page detailed summary
for consumers about tooth structure, tooth and gum care, including
tooth brushing instructions. There is an explanation of the steps in a
dentist's visit and an overview of treatment options such as crowns, scaling,
and root planing. Large color illustration of the tooth and its structure
and root canal treatment.
WEBSITES
Website of the international society of general
dentists who provide "primary dental care" to "patients of all ages." Information
for consumers on a variety of oral health topics. Select "For the Public."
A service of the Academy, SmileLine Online,
on the Academy's website, allows patients to post dental health questions
on a message board. The questions are answered by dentists who are Academy
members, though they are not identified by name. Questions and responses
are posted on the website.
Also, users of the website can find dentists who are members of the
Academy by searching online by typing a dentist's name or a location.
American
Dental Association (ADA)
Advice for maintaining dental health from
the American Dental Association, national professional association of dentists.
The "Find an ADA Member Dentist" section gives the Internet
user access to a list of ADA members, searchable by dentist's name or by
location. The site also provides information on the significance of the ADA Seal of Acceptance
for dental products and a list of approved consumer products.
Links to a collection of online dental health
resources and pamphlets from the website of the Stanford University Health
Library. The subjects include dental anatomy, jaw disorders, salivary gland disorders,
cosmetic dentistry, tooth whitening systems, fluoride, and tooth extractions.
A variety of oral health brochures available
online from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research,
a part of the National Institutes of Health. Select "Diseases and Conditions." Among the topics included
are fillings, gum diseases, sealants, Sjogren's syndrome, and taste disorders.
Information on periodontal plastic procedures,
children's oral health, women and periodontal disease, and related topics. Color photos of stages of gum disease are in the children's
oral health section. Some articles are available
in Spanish as well as English. From the consumer information section of the website of the American
Academy of Periodontology, an organization of dentists who specialize in treating gum disease.
Simple
Steps to Better Dental Health
A collection of dental information reviewed
by faculty of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Provides an overview of a variety of dental topics including implants,
root canal, crowns, and dentures.
The "Ask the Dentist" feature includes responses
written by Columbia University College of Dental Medicine dentists to health consumers' questions.
Surgeon
General's Report on Oral Health
Published in 2000, the Surgeon General's Report
on Oral Health, the first published by the Surgeon General's office, identifies
a "silent epidemic of dental and oral diseases." Emphasizes the connection
between oral health and general health.
Links to a variety of websites with information
on maintaining oral health. Some featured websites are written in Spanish.
The MedlinePlus consumer health website is produced by the National Library
of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health.

American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
"Find a Cosmetic Dentist" online referral
system. Searchable by area code, state, or zip code. In order to be included
on the referral list, both Accredited Members and General Members of the
organization must attend two out of four of the recent AACD Annual Scientific
Sessions.
American
Academy of Implant Dentistry
The "Find a Dentist" section of the website
includes a U.S. state-by-state and international list of "experienced and
credentialed dental professionals" in the field of oral implantology.
American
Academy of Periodontology
National professional organization of dentists
who specialize in treating gum disease. "Find a Periodontist" area of the
website allows health consumers to search for periodontists within a specific
distance of a selected zip code or for periodontists in a specific city
and state. International searches also available on the website. List of dentists
retrieved includes American Academy of Periodontology members who have decided to
participate in the "Find a Periodontist" search service.
American
Association of Endodontists
Patients seeking a dentist who specializes in diagnosing and treating
problems within a tooth can search the Find an Endodontist
area of the professional organization's website. The website's Patients area includes questions and
answers about root canal procedures and myths about the procedures, a brief guide to dental symptoms, and instructions
for saving a knocked-out tooth.
American Dental
Association website
The
"Find an ADA Dentist" area of the
American Dental
Association website gives the Internet user access to a list of ADA
members, searchable by dentist's name, or by location.
American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
The "Public Information" section of the organization's
website includes a "Find an OMS" area for patients. Oral and maxillofacial
surgeons specialize in surgery of the mouth, face, and jaws. They have at least four
years of additional specialized training after completion of dental
school. The website user can search for an oral and maxillofacial surgeon by last name, area code,
zip code, or city. Users may search for surgeons outside the U.S. as well.
American
Association of Orthodontists
There is a "Find an Orthodontist" search
system on the organization's website. Users can type names of a town and
state or zip code to retrieve a list of orthodontists in that area. Each listing includes
the orthodontist's name, address, phone number, and dental school attended. Consumers may also phone the
American Association of Orthodontists
(AAO) toll-free at 1-800-STRAIGHT (1-800-787-2444) for additional information.

State of Connecticut Department of Public
Health licensing requirements for health-related professions--acupuncturist,
dentists, physicians, etc. This website also allows users to verify the
license status of Connecticut health professionals by typing the name of
a doctor, dentist, or other health care provider in the License Verification
area of the web page. Select "License Verification," then "Health License." The verification area of
the website is updated each business day.
Connecticut
Bureau of Regulatory Services
The Connecticut Bureau of Regulatory Services
quarterly online report of disciplinary actions against dentists and other
health practitioners in Connecticut. ("Regulatory Action Report") Requires
Adobe Acrobat Reader on computer for online display. Earlier quarterly
reports also on Bureau's website. Reports can be viewed and downloaded.
Online search for dentists specializing in treating children, from
the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Searchable by dentist's name, by zip code, or city and state.
Updated weekly.
Suggestions from the National Institutes of Health about organizations and agencies
that may provide "reduced cost dental treatment."
On the website of the American Dental Association.
Question and answer format discusses how to resolve disputes, seek a dentist,
obtain dental records. Includes appropriate questions to ask your dentist
about treatment recommendations, cost of treatment, office policies.

A colorful, interactive website on dental health especially for children
from the American Dental Hygienists' Association. In addition to information about
