Purchasing:
The Farmington (UCHC) UConn Co-op branch is selling the 2009 recommended handheld for $289.95. These handhelds can be conveniently purchased and picked up at the bookstore. For more information please speak with bookstore staff at the UCHC campus. The UConn Co-op (UCHC branch) contact information is: (860) 679-2332. You may also purchase your handheld online or from a retail store if you prefer.
Operating System:
One of the applications, the Student Experience Log, will only run in Windows Mobile. The Student Experience Log allows you to log your patient interactions right on your handheld and then sync these interactions when you have a network connection. Logging your patient interactions is required by all students and a requirement for the School of Medicine's accreditation - the Student Experience Log strives to make logging this data easier. When purchasing a handheld device make sure you purchase a Pocket PC running Windows Mobile.
Secure Digital (SD) Cards:
As mentioned above you will need to purchase a Secure Digital (SD) card for your handheld. Without an SD card you will not have enough space to store the recommended programs on your handheld. SD cards are not very expensive and can be purchased through the UConn Co-op, retail stores, and online vendors.
Smartphones:
Due to a number of factors, the CEC does not have an officially recommended Smartphone. However, if you do go ahead and purchase a Smartphone there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind to ensure that you get a device that supports (works with) the recommended medical software. Please read through the Smartphone section of our Handheld general information page on things to be careful of when purchasing a Smartphone. This information can be found here: http://library.uchc.edu/departm/cec/pda/pdaGen.html#smartphones. Finally, be aware that very few of the handheld software vendors have an iPhone version of their software. Make sure you buy a device with Windows Mobile or Palm OS installed.
Handheld Clinics:
CEC staff is offering Handheld Clinics in December, January, and February so that you can receive assistance with installing the recommended medical software onto your PDA. To find out the dates and times of these handheld clinics as well as to register for them please visit this page: http://fitsweb.uchc.edu/student/pda/clinForm.aspx.
Handheld Software:
Recommended handheld software for your device can be downloaded here: Software Recommendations
Smartphones
The list of Smartphones below are phones that past students, faculty, and staff have used and have had the ability to load and run the recommended handheld software. Please note that this is not a list of officially recommended handhelds but only a list of handhelds that others have used with success. Please keep in mind that even though these smartphones will run the recommended software they may not function as well as a regular PDA. More information on the things to keep in mind when shopping for a smartphone can be found on this page: http://library.uchc.edu/departm/cec/pda/pdaGen.html#smartphones .

Palms
UConn Medical Students please be aware that the School of Medicine recommendation is that you buy a Windows Mobile handheld instead of a Palm so that you can use the Student Experience Log. Most of the handheld databases that the library subscribes to will run on both Palm and Pocket PC platforms. The CEC recommended Palm is the Palm TX.
