Laptop Encryption

Starting in 2009 all student laptops will be encrypted with McAfee Endpoint Encryption (formerly SafeBoot). Encryption involves encoding computer data so that it is unreadable to those unauthorized to use your computer. Student laptops are encrypted due to the fact that they may contain sensitive patient data which if stolen would result in a HIPAA violation. Please be aware that the UCHC implementation of McAfee Endpoint Encryption encrypts data when the computer is shutdown so make sure to not leave a computer with sensitive data on it turned on and unattended. Due to the fact that your laptop may contain patient information do not allow anyone else to use your laptop as this may result in a HIPAA violation.

Encryption FAQs

What are the benefits of encryption?
• If your laptop is lost or stolen no one outside of the UCHC community can access it.
• Your laptop will conform to HIPAA rules.
• Encryption of information is used wherever medicine is practiced - early adoption of practices will develop good medical career habits.

Do student laptops need to be encrypted?
The purpose of the laptop encryption is to safeguard the loss or theft of any information including protected health information (PHI) that may be stored on a laptop. The State of Connecticut has mandated that laptops containing PHI be encrypted. The Deans of the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine are complying with federal, state, and UCHC mandates by requiring this encryption. This also protects you from theft of your personal information should your laptop be lost or stolen.

Does the encryption allow UCHC to monitor what I am doing on my machine?
No. Encryption protects all laptop data from loss or theft. It does not allow additional access to that information.

I do not have access to patient specific data. Why do I have to get my laptop encrypted?
After the first two years of Medical/Dental school, students will have access to PHI. To protect that data, it is necessary to encrypt current UCHC student laptops. Starting with the class of 2013, all new laptops are encrypted for classes attending UConn SOM and SODM. This will prepare students for their health care careers where encryption is a standard practice.

Will I lose any data stored on my laptop?
No data is removed during the encryption process. In 2009 and early in 2010, some students thought they had lost data. However, this perception was a result of changing the domain the students log into, and the data was subsequently found. Procedures were then changed to ensure students knew how to find their old data. Starting with the class of 2013, each new laptop is already encrypted.

Will the encryption process slow down my computer?
No, computing performance will remain the same. McAfee Endpoint Encyrption was benchmarked with Lenovo, HP, Sony, Dell, and Gateway, and does not increase startup times.
