Why Is It Important To Backup Data?
- Any files not backed up cannot be restored in the event of data loss
- You could lose all your lecture notes, contacts, emails, documents, etc.
- Common causes of lost data:
- Computer hardware failures
- Operating system failures
- Viruses and other forms of malware
How To Backup Data

CDs / DVDs
- Not flexible: Backup is burnt to the disc one time, any changes to files need to be re-burnt
- Low cost
- Average cost: $0.25 - $1.00

External Hard Drive
- Flexible: Changes to files can be easily added to external hard drive
- Some include software to allow for scheduling of backups
- Average cost: $80 - $150

Online Backup Service
- Flexible: Changes to files can be easily added to online backup
- Some online backup services include software to allow for scheduling of backups
- Access to backup available anywhere you have an Internet connection
- Average cost: $5 per month
CEC File Backup Policy
To protect the personal privacy of UCHC students:
- CEC staff cannot backup student files - this must be performed by the student
- Student files cannot be stored on UCHC owned equipment - students must store backups on their own personally owned equipment (please see the How to backup data section of this page).
What To Backup
- Consider where you have stored files on your computer
- Consider the programs you use to create, edit, and save files to your machine
- Consider any programs you have purchased and make sure you have the licenses and ability to re-install them
- Additional files to consider backing up
