Wireless
UCHC's wireless network is accessible to students, faculty, and Health Center employees. To logon to the UCHC network you must have a network card that supports LEAP authentication. All of the recommended laptops that can be purchased through the UConn Co-op support LEAP authentication. If your internal wireless card does not support LEAP authentication then you can purchase an external Cisco wireless card. The latest laptop wireless card available through Cisco is the CB21AG wireless card. To find out more information on LEAP Authentication, specifics on the CB21AG Cisco wireless card, or ordering this card - please visit Cisco's web site. To access documentation on setting up one of the recommended laptops to access the UCHC wireless network please locate the particular laptop you purchased below and click on its link. After clicking on the appropriate link you will need to enter you Blackboard username and password to view or download the file. These instructions may also be found within Blackboard by clicking on Laptop/PDA Support under UCHC Tools (left side of the screen) and then clicking on Wireless Laptop Setup.Wireless Setup Instructions (requires Blackboard login)
Printing
Students are able to access CEC and Study room printers for curricular related printing. Three printers are located in the CEC in which all computers are setup with the ability to print to these printers. A fourth printer is located and accessible in the Shafer Study Rooms 24 hours a day. Students also have the ability to setup their laptops to print to these printers. For instructions on how to setup your laptop to print to these printers please click here (you will need to login using your Blackboard username and password to view or download these documents - these instructions may also be found within Blackboard by clicking on Laptop/PDA Support under UCHC Tools (left side of the screen) and then clicking on Printing). Print drivers for the CEC and study room printers (if you don't have them) may be found on HP's website. The study room printer is a LaserJet 8150 printer and the CEC printers are LaserJet 4350 printers.Recommended Software
It is recommended that students install security software such as Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software. The Health Center's IT department has purchased a subscription to Symantec Anti-Virus which can be installed on student's personal laptops and can be downloaded from the Health Center's IT web site. Note: the student version of Symantec Anti-Virus must be installed onsite using Internet Explorer. The link for the student version of Symantec Anti-Virus is provided below. In addition to an anti-virus program, students should also use Anti-Spyware protection software. There are a number of products on the market which you may purchase, but the CEC also recommends three Anti-Spyware programs which are free for personal use. Unlike Anti-Virus programs you may install more than one Anti-Spyware program on your computer. The recommended Anti-Spyware programs are listed below. The CEC recommends that students install a Firewall on their personal machines. Only one Firewall should be installed on a machine or Internet application conflicts will arise. It is also recommended that you install a third party firewall that monitors incoming and outgoing Internet traffic over Windows Firewall which only monitors incoming traffic. The CEC recommends a third party Firewall below which is free for personal use. CEC Staff has listed additional recommended software that students may want to install. Finally, it is highly recommended that students stay up to date with Windows Updates which are usually released the first Tuesday of every month. You can set your Windows machine to do one of the following: (1) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them (2) Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them (3) Notify me but don't automatically download or install them (4) Turn off Automatic Updates. These options can be set by going to your Start Menu and clicking on Control Panel. Then locating Security Center and finding Automatic Updates in the Security Center.| Software Recommendations | |||
